Wedding Cake FAQs

How to choose a wedding cake designer/maker?

There are a lot of cake makers out there and it’s very hard sometimes to make a decision about who to choose to create your wedding cake. Each cake designer will have their own style so check out our gallery first and see some of the styles we’ve made before. We always create a design unique to you and your big day, so if you have images of other cakes, you’ve seen please share them with us. At Louly’s Little Bakery it important to us that you are 100% confident in your choices, so we like to get to know you first before we start designing your cake. Both of you should feel relaxed in sharing your ideas with us and also be able to say no to any ideas you don’t like. Other things to consider are availability, distance and price.

When is the best time to book my wedding cake?

Availability is often the biggest hurdle when wanting to book your cake designer. May to September or “wedding season” as it’s known, our Saturday slots book up, up to 2 years in advance. That doesn’t mean its not worth checking if we have your date available but to ensure the quality of your cake, we can only take on a limited number of wedding cakes a week.

How much will my wedding cake cost?

There are a number of things to consider when pricing a cake; how many portions you require, how many tiers you would like, and the design of the cake are the first things to consider. All our cakes are bespoke and therefore so are our prices.

Portion amount, this is usually your total number of guests minus 15% as not everyone will eat cake. But this is just a guide, some people are cake people, and some are not, so just order the amount you want. There’s no point having loads of cake which no one’s going to eat. If you only need a minimal amount of cake but want the 3 tier look than add additional tier as dummy cakes. These are polystyrene blocks decorated to look just like cake… no one will ever know! Have a look at our portion guide for help.

Tiers and decoration, it’s all in the design! A 3 tier cake can be simply decorated with small sprays of fresh flowers whilst a two tier cake can be ornately finished with sugar work, and hand crafted figures but both could work out to be the same price. It’s important that we create the design of your dreams, but we also recognise that many couples have a budget, so we can always give different options on design details to meet a variety of budgets.

When will I have to pay for my wedding cake?

To book your cake you will need to pay 1/3 of the total cost of your cake. The outstanding amount is then due 6 weeks before your big day.

How far in advance will my cake be made?

There is a time frame with all wedding cakes and depending on complexity some elements of your design could have to be made weeks in advance, things such as sugar flowers or figures. The sponges of your cake will be baked 4 days before delivery. For example, if your wedding is on a Saturday, baking and filling preparation start on Tuesday. For our naked and semi naked cakes we bake much closer to delivery as they won’t have the protection of the fondant cover, and we don’t want them drying out!

Can we have different flavours for each tier?

Yes of course you can. This is very common now and couples often like to have their own tiers, or they have one just for their gran. There are no rules anymore, so you can be as wild as you like with your flavour choices.

Fruit cake? Yes or no?

The most common question we get is regarding fruit cake. Love it or hate it, it’s a wedding tradition. But it doesn’t have to even be there if you don’t like it. Some couples opt for a small one for the older generation attending or they choose to keep it for the christening of their first child. There’s no need to have fruit cake as a large bottom layer anymore, as with the modern way of stacking cakes, it is perfectly safe to cake the heavier fruit cake as your top tier.

Will you deliver our wedding cake?

Yes, we deliver on the day of your wedding and setup in the venue. We will coordinate with your venue to ensure the cake is there on time and looking beautiful ready for when you enter your reception.

Can we hire cake a stand?

Yes, we have several stands available, but its always worth checking with your venue to see if they have one to use. Ours are available with a safety deposit which returned to you on after the collection of the stands following your wedding.

There’s been a last minute change of plan, can I change the design/colour theme of our cake?

Up until 6 weeks before the wedding your design is completely changeable. Need more portions, need less portions, change to more tiers or less tiers, not a problem at all. If its really last minute (and it does happen) we will do our best to accommodate you.

Can real flowers be used on our cake?

Yes, real flowers can be used on your cake. Usually, your florist will leave some flowers at the venue for us to dress the cake once it has been set up. There are also other floral options that we can supply; sugar flowers are the most expensive option as these are handmade, or either dried or silk flowers which are both very popular at the moment.
